Committee for Ghana's Democratic Refinement

 By Shine Esi Kwawukumey

In a significant move to enhance Ghana’s democratic governance, President John Dramani Mahama has established a new Constitutional Review Committee.

This step fulfills his promise to implement the Constitutional Review Process, aimed at addressing gaps and challenges within the nation's 1992 Constitution.

The committee comprises distinguished members, each bringing a wealth of expertise and dedication to the task at hand.

The committee is chaired by Prof. H. Kwasi Prempeh, a renowned constitutional expert, known for his deep understanding of governance and constitutional law.

Other notable members include Justice Sophia Adinyirah, Prof. Kwame Karikari, Mrs. Charlotte Osei, Dr. Godwin Djokoto, Ibrahim Tanko Amidu, Dr. Esi Ansah, and Dr. Rainer Akumperigeya, who serves as the secretary.

Prof. Prempeh, the chairman of the committee, is a distinguished legal scholar and the Executive Director of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana).

His extensive research and publications on constitutional law and democratic governance position him as a pivotal figure in this review process.

His leadership is expected to guide the committee in making comprehensive and forward-thinking recommendations.

Prof. Kwame Karikari

Prof. Kwame Karikari, a revered academic and media expert, brings a rich legacy of defending press freedom and advocating for human rights.

His previous work as the Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has had a lasting impact on media freedoms across the region.

His insights will be invaluable in ensuring that the constitutional amendments promote and protect fundamental freedoms and rights.

The committee is tasked with identifying gaps and challenges in the implementation of previous constitutional review efforts, notably those from the 2010 Constitution Review Commission and the 2023 Constitution Review Consultative Committee.

By engaging key stakeholders and soliciting their views on constitutional amendments, the committee aims to make actionable recommendations to enhance democratic governance.

As the committee embarks on this crucial mission, it is essential to acknowledge their commitment to upholding the principles of democracy and good governance.

The nation's hopes rest on their shoulders, with the expectation that their work will lead to meaningful reforms that reflect the aspirations of all Ghanaians.

Congratulations to the committee members on their appointment.

Their expertise, dedication, and integrity are the cornerstones upon which the future of Ghana's democratic evolution rests.

We extend our best wishes as they undertake this pivotal review, shaping the nation's governance framework for the betterment of all citizens.

This committee’s work is not just a task but a testament to Ghana's continuous journey toward democratic excellence.

As the committee sets out to deliver their recommendations within the next five months, the nation watches with anticipation, hopeful for a future built on the foundations of justice, equity, and the rule of law.
